Why see an Educational Psychologist?

With Children

Often parents are concerned about a child’s literacy or numeracy skills as they do not seem to be making the expected level of progress; sometimes there is a feeling that something is not quite right. A child’s reading, spelling or writing may not seem to reflect their underlying ability or spoken language skills. They may be experiencing difficulties with their working memory, processing speed or with  their general learning at school and their exam results may not reflect their performance in class.

Some children may be approaching 11+ or external exams or be at the age of secondary transfer and parents may feel that a full educational psychology assessment is of benefit to make sure that their child is in the right school.

An Educational Psychology assessment can be useful to identify whether a child is gifted and talented as some children have the ability to achieve but, for whatever reason, are not reaching their full potential. Exceptionally bright children are sometimes overlooked at school and an assessment can highlight ways to ensure a child’s learning is extended and they are fully stimulated.

With Adults

Adults may be concerned about their literacy skills or memory and how this is impacting upon their ability to undertake written tasks in the workplace; they may suspect they have dyslexia. They may be struggling with professional exams and would like some guidance as to next steps. They might need some adaptations to be made to the work place or access to exam concessions so that they can perform to the best of their ability.

Students may be applying to university and feel that they might need some additional support with their learning. They could feel that they need a Disabled Student’s Allowance and need a full assessment to inform this process.
